How to get cited by Perplexity.

The engine that shows its work. Every Perplexity answer cites its sources by number, which makes it the most transparent engine to win, and the easiest one to learn from.

Getting cited by Perplexity means your pages are among the numbered sources its answers are built from. Unlike ChatGPT, which decides per question whether to search the live web, Perplexity searches for nearly everything: each answer runs live retrieval, reads a set of sources, and cites them inline. That makes it the purest answer engine of the three we track, and the one where the path from “published a better answer” to “appeared in the answer” is shortest.

It matters for a second reason: Perplexity’s users are researchers by temperament. They ask longer, more specific questions, compare options, and click the citations. Being source three in a Perplexity answer puts you in front of someone actively deciding, and the visit that follows is a qualified one.

How it works

Retrieval first, always.

Perplexity maintains its own search index and ranking system, retrieves a small set of pages per question, and synthesizes the answer with the citations visible. Because retrieval happens on nearly every question, your reputation inside the model’s training data matters less here than anywhere else. What matters is whether your pages are indexed, retrievable, and specific enough to be chosen for this question, right now.

Like every engine we track, it judges relevance at the passage level, lifting the sentences that answer rather than whole pages, and its answers vary between runs. The goal is frequency across a fixed set of prompts, not a position you hold.

Perplexity numbers its sources. Run your buyer’s question and the answer doubles as a reading list of exactly who beat you and with what page.

What Perplexity actually cites.

Across the local-business markets we track, topic guides lead Perplexity’s citations the way they do everywhere. What is distinctive here shows up in the individual URLs: ranked lists crowd the top of Perplexity’s most-used sources in competitive markets, directory profile pages, the Zocdocs, Healthgrades, Thumbtacks, and Houzzes of your category, carry heavy weight, and Reddit threads appear in every market we monitor. One more thing the URL lists show: a well-built page earns its place fast. A service page we published this summer became Perplexity’s single most-used source for its market within weeks, appearing in roughly two of every three answers.

The five moves

What actually gets a local business cited.

The shared foundation from our ChatGPT guide applies here too. The Perplexity-specific leverage is in moves 02 and 04.

01

Be one coherent entity everywhere

Same rule as every engine: name, address, phone, and description identical across your site, directories, review platforms, and profiles, so retrieval resolves one business instead of guessing between versions. Run the free Entity Consistency Check to find the mismatches.

02

Publish the ranked list your market is missing

Ranked lists crowd the top of Perplexity’s most-used sources in market after market we track, in one, half of the ten most-used URLs are “best of” lists, and most local categories have no good one: the roundups are stale, thin, or written by a directory that has never seen the work. A rigorous comparison page, best sod varieties for Wake County lawns, which water heater brands hold up on the coast, including options that are not you, is the single most Perplexity-shaped page a local business can publish.

03

Structure pages so a machine can lift them

Passage retrieval: one question per section, the answer in the first sentence under the heading, schema that says what you do and where. Perplexity rewards specificity harder than the others, because its retrieval chooses per question. The page that answers “how much does sod installation cost in Wake County” beats the page that mentions it.

04

Complete the directories, then show up where the community talks

In our Perplexity tracking, directory profile pages are among the most-used sources in every service category: Zocdoc and Healthgrades in health, Thumbtack, Houzz, and HomeAdvisor in the trades. Your profile on the directories your category leans on is a page Perplexity is actively reading, so complete it like one. Reddit appears in every market we monitor too, and the rule there is genuine participation, not promotion, plus earning the kind of specific review (“replaced our water heater same-day”) that community answers quote. When a directory, a thread, and your own page all confirm the same facts, you occupy several of the answer’s sources at once.

05

Read the citations, then take the seats

This is the engine where testing teaches the most. Run your buyer’s question in a private window and read the numbered sources: every citation is a seat, and each one is either yours, earnable (a directory you can complete, a roundup you can be added to, a thread you can genuinely join), or a page you can outwrite. Screenshot the answer as your baseline and re-run the same prompts in 60 to 90 days.

What to expect

The same clock, a faster read.

The timeline matches the other engines: movement within 60 to 90 days when existing content and authority are in place, four to six months building from very little, and answers vary between runs throughout, so judge frequency across a fixed prompt set. The difference is feedback speed. Because Perplexity retrieves live, a new page that earns citations can appear in its answers about as fast as it gets indexed, and we have watched a page go from published to most-used source in its market inside a month. This is the engine where the work usually registers first.

The takeaway

Thirty minutes, this week.

Ask Perplexity the one question your best customer would ask before hiring you, and read the sources, not just the answer. Count the seats: how many citations are earnable this quarter? Most owners find at least two. Then start with move 01, and consider whether your market is missing the list Perplexity wants to cite, because you might be the one qualified to write it.

Common questions

Before you start.

How is Perplexity different from ChatGPT for local search?

ChatGPT decides per question whether to search the live web. Perplexity searches for nearly everything and always shows its citations, which makes it faster to reflect new content and far easier to learn from, because every answer lists the exact pages it was built from.

Does Perplexity have enough users to matter for a local business?

Fewer than ChatGPT or Google, but the composition is unusually valuable: people who research before buying and who click through to sources. And because the same work wins every engine, Perplexity visibility comes from work you’re already doing, and it shows you the results fastest.

Why does Perplexity cite Reddit so much?

Its retrieval favors sources where real people compare specific options with concrete details, and community threads are dense with exactly that. For a local business the lesson is to make sure the specific, verifiable details a community would cite, what you charge, how fast you show up, what the work looks like, exist somewhere it can retrieve.

Can I pay Perplexity to be cited?

No. Perplexity has experimented with sponsored questions and ads around answers, but the citations inside an answer are chosen by retrieval and cannot be bought. The work is earning the citation, which is also why it compounds instead of stopping when a budget does.

Should I write a ‘best of’ list that includes my competitors?

If you can do it in good faith, yes. A rigorous comparison that includes options you do not sell is more citable than a page that only praises you, because it answers the question buyers actually ask. Naming credible alternatives is what makes your recommendation credible, and you control the criteria that frame the comparison.

How do I find out where I stand right now?

Run the free Citation Check for a fast read, or the AI Visibility Audit for the formal version: a 10 business day engagement that scores your AI visibility across six areas against the questions your customers ask in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity, and sets what to fix first and who should do it.
