How to get cited by Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.

One guide for both. The work overlaps almost entirely. How Google’s AI surfaces choose their sources, and the moves that put your business in the answer.

Getting cited by Google AI Overviews and AI Mode means your pages are among the sources Google’s AI reads and links when it assembles an answer. Both features are built on Google’s existing search index, which makes them different from ChatGPT in one decisive way: your standing in regular Google search still matters, and so does your Google Business Profile.

The stakes are larger here than on any other engine, because this is where your customers already are, and since mid-2026 the AI answer is the default Google experience, no longer just a feature. The classic links still exist, they just sit below the answer. Seer Interactive’s research found organic click-through drops by more than half on queries where an AI answer appears. Being in the answer is no longer a bonus. It is where the clicks went.

How it works

Two features, one index, different depths.

AI Overviews is the AI summary that appears with classic search results. Google retrieves pages from its index, has Gemini synthesize them, and links the sources. Google’s own guidance is that no special optimization exists for AI features: the fundamentals that earn ordinary rankings are the same ones that earn citations. The correlation is real but loose. Ahrefs’ analysis found only about 38 percent of Overview citations come from that query’s top-10 results. Ranking helps, and pages that never ranked on page one still get cited when they answer the question more directly.

AI Mode is the conversational experience, and since mid-2026 it is the default way Google search works, not an optional tab. It works differently in a way worth understanding. Google’s name for the technique is query fan-out: your customer’s one question is broken into many sub-queries, searched simultaneously, and synthesized. Every one of those sub-questions is a chance to be retrieved, which is why a business that publishes real answers across the whole buying decision beats one great page.

How query fan-out works
One question in. Many searches out.
What your customer asks
“Who should replace my water heater in Wilmington?”
↓ Google searches, all at once ↓
Water heater replacement cost Wilmington NC
Tank vs tankless water heater for coastal homes
Best plumber for water heater installation near me
Does a water heater replacement need a permit in NC
How long does a water heater replacement take

Sub-queries are illustrative of the pattern Google describes; the real set varies per search. Each one retrieves its own sources, so every sub-question you have published a direct answer to is another chance to be in the final response.

Both features judge relevance at the passage level, the way ChatGPT does: they lift the sentences that answer, not whole pages. And local “who should I hire” questions lean on a source the other engines cannot match: Google’s own local layer, your Business Profile, reviews, and Maps data.

Google’s AI does not replace your search presence. It sits on top of it, and it inherits every strength and gap you already have.

The five moves

What actually gets a local business cited.

If you read our ChatGPT guide, the moves are familiar. The Google-specific leverage is in moves 01 and 05.

01

Make your Google Business Profile the best page you own

On local questions, Google’s AI reads its own local layer first, and your Business Profile is the one surface where you control what it finds. Every field complete, primary category exact, services itemized, attributes set, photos current, and a review pattern where customers name the actual work. This is the single highest-leverage move for Google’s AI surfaces specifically, and in our audit work it is where the most gaps show up.

02

Answer the whole buying decision

Query fan-out means Google is searching questions your customer never typed: the cost version, the comparison version, the trust version, the same-day version. Publish direct answers across that whole path, prices or ranges included, each section written so it survives being read alone. Not sure what the sub-questions are? Build your prompt set, it maps exactly this.

03

Keep the SEO fundamentals current

This is the engine where your existing rank still pays. Crawlable pages, clean titles and headings, schema that says what you do and where, internal links that connect your service pages to your answers. Google’s own guidance says it outright: the practices that earn rankings are the ones that earn AI citations. If your site has been coasting on a two-year-old build, this is the engine that notices.

04

Earn corroboration, and take video seriously

Like every engine, Google’s AI leans on independent sources: directories, reviews, local press. The Google-specific wrinkle is YouTube, which Ahrefs found is now the most-cited domain in AI Overviews, and Google property citations are heavily favored. A handful of answer-shaped videos, how you price, what a job looks like, who you serve, is disproportionate leverage here compared to any other engine.

05

Measure it, in Search Console and by hand

Google is the one engine that shows you real data. Search Console now reports impressions from AI features, so you can see whether your pages appear in its AI answers. Pair it with manual runs: a private window, the questions a ready-to-buy customer would ask, asked the way Google now works, conversationally, with the follow-ups a real buyer would type. Check the classic results view too, where AI Overviews still appear. Screenshot both, that is your baseline, and re-run the same prompts in 60 to 90 days.

What to expect

The timeline, and one earned advantage.

Businesses with existing content and authority usually see movement within 60 to 90 days, building from very little takes four to six months, and answers vary run to run, so judge frequency across a fixed prompt set rather than any single result.

The advantage: if you have done years of legitimate local SEO, Google’s AI is where that work compounds first. The index already knows you. The gap is usually that your pages were written to rank rather than to be quoted, and that simply requires a rewrite.

The takeaway

Thirty minutes, this week.

Search the one question your best customer would ask, and read the answer Google now leads with. If you are cited, screenshot it and strengthen what put you there. If you are not, look at who is: the answer usually means one of the five moves is missing.

Common questions

Before you start.

What is the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode?

AI Overviews is the AI-generated summary that appears with classic search results, with links to its sources. AI Mode is the conversational experience, and since mid-2026 it is the default way Google search works: you ask, get a synthesized answer built from many background sub-queries, and can follow up, with the classic links below. They draw on the same index, and the same work improves your visibility in both.

Do I have to rank on page one to be cited?

No, but it helps. Roughly a third of AI Overview citations come from the top 10 results for the query, which means most citations come from elsewhere: deeper pages on trusted sites that answer the specific question directly. Ranking remains the strongest single correlate, and a page that both ranks and answers cleanly is the best position to be in.

Does my Google Business Profile really affect AI answers?

Yes, more than on any other engine. On local questions, Google’s AI surfaces draw on the local layer that Business Profiles, reviews, and Maps data feed. A complete, accurate, actively maintained profile is the highest-leverage single surface for local visibility in Google’s AI features.

How do I know if I am appearing in AI Overviews?

Two ways. Google Search Console includes AI feature impressions in its reporting, which shows whether your pages are being surfaced in Google’s AI answers, AI Mode included. And manual checks: search your key customer questions in a private window and read the answer. AI visibility tracking tools also monitor these surfaces, some as add-on coverage, and automate the manual runs at scale.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews but stay in regular search?

Not separately. Google treats AI features as part of Search, so the same controls govern both: blocking one blocks your search presence too. Practically, the choice is to compete for the citation, because opting out of the answer does not make the answer go away. It just removes you from it.

Is this the same work as optimizing for ChatGPT?

About four-fifths of it, yes. Entity consistency, quotable answer pages, structure, and corroboration carry across every engine. The Google-specific fifth is the parts tied to its index: your Business Profile, your existing rankings, and YouTube. Do the shared work once and add the Google layer, which is why we run both in the same engagement.

How do I find out where I stand right now?

Run the free Citation Check for a fast read, or the AI Visibility Audit for the formal version: a 10 business day engagement that scores your AI visibility across six areas against the questions your customers ask in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity, and sets what to fix first and who should do it.
